Tragedy strikes Poland in Smolensk air crash

Our thoughts and condolences are with the people of Poland, in particular the families and friends of the victims, following the aeroplane crash that took place in Smolensk, western Russia, on 10 April 2010. The incident resulted in the loss of life of prominent public figures from politics, civil society and the armed forces of Poland, who had been travelling to visit the site of the Katyn tragedy, where 70 years earlier thousands of Polish officers were murdered on Stalin’s order by the Soviet secret services.
