Is Ukraine’s loss of Crimea Putin’s mission accomplished?
Ukrainian citizens residing in Crimea must be pulled out of the peninsula and the security of Crimean Tatars living there must be guaranteed, according to an analysis by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation.
In addition, diplomatic pressure on potential allies and international organizations must be strengthened, with the objective of forcing Russian military forces out of Crimea, and Ukrainian control over regions in the country’s southeast must be reinforced to prevent the expansion of similar separatist scenarios, according to the report, which was included in the think-tank’s latest edition of Focus on Ukraine, its weekly news-analysis publication.
“In this case, Ukraine can only hope that western countries will manage to put sufficient pressure on Russia to reconsider its plans of expansion and its behavior on the international arena,” the report concludes.
